We are on the hunt for an experienced Financial Controller to oversee all financial aspects of our business and drive the company’s financial strategy and planning.

The Financial Controller will ensure the company’s ongoing growth by providing financial leadership and effective management of all operational and corporate accounting, internal controls, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, treasury, audit, and tax. The Financial Controller will provide support and counsel on the financial aspects of business operations and will manage one direct report, the Accounting Assistant.

This is a full time position based in our downtown Kelowna office.

Job Overview

Business Planning

  • Assists in the creation of annual operating and capital budgets and targets based on the strategic plan
  • Collaborates with the CEO/COO on fundraising activities
  • Collaborates with the CEO/COO to refine appropriate metrics to assess, monitor and measure financial performance; provides weekly and monthly financial reporting and analysis to the Leadership Team
  • Alongside the corporate tax advisors, monitors and recommends changes where needed to the corporate structure to ensure tax efficiencies are maximized, providing careful consideration when new jurisdictions are added to the company’s business reach

Financial Management

  • Reports on financial data for each business segment on a weekly and monthly basis
  • Presents financial statements and projections quarterly to Board of Directors
  • Establishes and reports regularly on cash flow projections and cash position
  • Manages cash flow for multiple entities in two currencies
  • Administers cost and margin controls that maintain target segment margins across all departments
  • Effectively manages legal resources in a cost-effective manner
  • Maintains a risk management plan that provides for best-value property, liability, and D&O insurance and risk management policies
  • Ensures financial document control is compliant with accounting best practices
  • Manages and coaches the Accounting Assistant and directs his/her work

External Relations

  • Strengthens and develops the company’s relationships with external accountants, investors and key banking contacts through communication on financing and capital requirements and maintaining reporting compliance
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with financial consultants, lawyers, insurers, business consultants, suppliers and other providers of external services
  • Key point of contact for landlords with respect to contractual arrangements of office space

Requirements:

  • CPA designation
  • Minimum 5 years of post-designation accounting experience
  • Strong, demonstrated business, strategic and financial acumen
  • Strong advocate for good accounting and financial management
  • Able to structure and progress an accounting department and mature processes
  • Ability to develop, analyze and create insights from financial and operational data
  • Ability to create annual plans and budgets and contingency plans to meet department goals
  • Administrative and analytic aptitude to find insights in the management of the department
  • Bias for action and taking the initiative to move projects forward quickly
  • Experience managing direct reports
  • Strong personal alignment of Estated’s values
  • Self-motivated with a passion for working in a startup environment
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office and financial management software (Quickbooks Canadian Premier and US Enterprise)
